1) Get friends. The key to low sec, especially if you're a semi-carebear / carebear with teeth type character is to join up with a bunch of similar ppl, ideally ones already established in a low sec mission running area. They will help you (and you'll help them) get out of trouble. Different groups have different methods for this, but long term, you want to kick anyone not friendly out of the area you live in.
If you intend to go solo nomad, best advice is to get someone to scout you into 0.0, where the ratting is much better. Don't go dronelands unless you have a way / friends to help you to get the drone minerals out. Otherwise you can go for days without seeing someone
Alternatively, sign up with one of the many renter alliances / corps already out in 0.0. You shouldn't be expected to pvp much or even at all, and if you're lucky, you'll get access to intel channels to boot. Just remember, the renter alliance is only as strong as the alliance who owns it (landlord alliance) and don't move all your worldly posessions out to 0.0 or you could be losing them next war or when landlord alliance tire of their renters
1a) Learn how to survive in low sec / 0.0. Always have local open in a separate window, treat anyone you don't know as hostile until proven otherwise, and if there are hostiles in system, don't rat, but get safe (i.e. dock up, cloak or constantly move between different safe spots (bookmarks that you create mid warp and so can't be warped to by enemies (unless they have probes, hence to keep moving and constantly make new spots)). This is why 0.0 is better as rats are better and there are invariably less ppl, so less wasted time being safe
2) Drop any pretences about mining. It is less profitable (the ores are just plain worth less) vs. high sec until you get to the relatively few 0.0 systems where the really good ores are (and those systems are usually protected / no go, logistics aside).
3) Don't mix fits. Either you're there for pvp and some ratting on the side when no one is around, or you're there to rat and run like a screaming girl when hostiles turn up. PvE ships don't make for good pvp ships and vice versa. If you go for the ratting and running strategy, train cloak asap (you can't be probed when cloaked. The only way to decloak you is to get within 2000m of you with a drone or ship (or drone/ship get in range of you). So also don't cloak in a belt or near a gate or where someone can see you but warp to a safespot first, then cloak). Sure it is a "lame tactic" as every pvper will tell you, but it works
_______ People like that don't have friends just temporary common interests.
